No experience is necessary! All that you need is patience, love, and your parental intuition.
1. Right from the start: birth - preschool
It is important that you prepare your child from the beginning of her life to find reading natural and easy.
- Surround her with books that she can hold and look at anytime.
- Read aloud to your child from the time she is born.
- Sing songs and play games with her.
- Teach the ABC's and their sounds naturally through speaking and during daily routine.
2. Direct instruction: PHONICS
- ALL CHILDREN NEED DIRECT INSTRUCTION. How much and how long may vary.
- Know when he is ready. Often around age 4 a child is ready to learn to read.
- Resources for teaching your child to read phonetically are plentiful. They do not have to be expensive. Check the Liberty Reading Services page for my book and also the other links page for additional resources.
- Always be patient and go at your child's pace. IMPATIENCE AND FRUSTRATION ARE ALWAYS COUNTERPRODUCTIVE..
3. Stick with the program!
When your child goes to school you are still in charge. Keep teaching him to read at home and be his advocate at school. You know your child's strengths and weaknesses and you are the best one to insure that he is getting what he needs to meet his full potential.
Even once your child is reading independently, you should continue to encourage her growth as a reader by helping her to find new books, authors, and subjects that will interest and inspire her to read and to learn.
